The MS in Global Leadership program said goodbye to Cohort 51 on August 5th. Capping a 16-month journey, this amazing group of students worked on projects right up until the morning of graduation. Their final presentation, a real-world consulting project for Wabtec Global Services, included many of the concepts the group had studied over the past several months: business strategy, negotiations, cross-cultural leadership, and more. Cohort 51 helped develop a short-term and long-term business strategy for Wabtec, a global manufacturer of rail and transit materials, to enter the Brazilian market. The group presented their ideas to a Wabtec executive, who appreciated their insight and recommendations.
The graduation ceremony itself was one of the best in recent memory. Cohort 51 chose Mark Henry to represent them as the student speaker. Mark kept everyone laughing with his remarks and humbly thanked the group for helping him through the program.
The cohort also chose Professor Junichi Semitsu as the “Professor of Impact.” Prof. Semitsu’s comments to the group (including several comparisons of Cohort 51 to Area 51 and UFO/alien sightings) reminded us of a comedy routine with a great moral to the story: these extraordinary graduates were ready to lead the business world through the challenges of the future.
The MSGL staff always sees graduation as a bittersweet event. We’ll miss the colorful and diverse personalities of this group, but we’re excited to see what’s next for each of them. We definitely hope Cohort 51 will keep in touch and come back to visit often. Congratulations again!

We had a great time getting to know most of Cohort 55 last Thursday at their orientation. This is probably our most diverse group ever, which will make for an interesting 16 months for these folks.
At orientation, Cohort 55 heard from several current students and recent graduates who attended to give their perspective on the program. Their advice for the new students was spot-on and well-received by everyone. Hot topics included study abroad options and campus events/guest speakers/networking.
Classes have already begun online, so the students are off and running. We’ll see them again for their first week on campus on Sept. 19th. In the meantime, they’ll work mostly on their business ethics course, along with taking the Myers Briggs Type Indicator in order to learn more about themselves and their leadership style.
We’ll have a welcome reception for Cohort 55 on Sept. 22 at 5pm in O’toole’s in the USD Student Life Pavilion. All alumni, current students, prospective students, and friends of the program are invited. RSVP here.
Cohort 55 has a fun road ahead. What advice do you have for our newest students?

Every summer we like to kick off the new school year by sailing around San Diego Bay for a few hours with all new and returning USD business students. This is always a great event, full of networking, cocktails, entertainment, and great conversation – all while watching the sunset over Point Loma.
This year’s event is on Tuesday, August 30 and all graduate business students are invited to attend. This event is free (as long as you show up).
Here are a few pics from years past.

Just a quick reminder for prospective students – we’ve only got a couple of weeks left until the July 1 deadline for the August cohort (online work starts in August, classes meet the week of 19-24 September).
It’s shaping up to be quite a group so far. Lots of great experience, some international influence, and plenty of diversity.
As always, let us know if you have any questions.
